ABOUT ME

Dear Parents and Community,

My name is Tabitha Steen, and I give you my warmest greetings as you consider me to join your educational family. I was raised on Hollywood Beach in Oxnard, taught pre-k at an academic preschool in Malibu for 13 years, and currently live in the wonderful Camarillo community. This is my 6th year at PVSD, where I have taught TK, Kindergarten, and 4th Grade.

I am a strong believer that in life, and as educators, it is our own personal experiences that shape who we are and what we believe in. I would like to take a few moments to share with you my educational roots.

My passion and drive to be – not only a teacher – but a great teacher derives from my genetic ties to education. My mother is a teacher, and growing up she ran a family preschool out of our home. Although, I was no more than a child myself, I was raised as her co-teacher. This continued when she took a job opportunity, as a preschool teacher in Malibu. I was soon hired myself, attending night school until I received all my credits. Starting at the age of 14 I worked after school and summers. This turned into an assistant teacher position at 18, and by the age of 22 I was lead-teacher of the pre-k room. I maintained this position for eight years, until deciding to further my education – eyes set on teaching elementary.

My young academic path was a challenging one. I struggled with reading and math, as a child. I recall being given reading assessments in the fourth grade that crushed my self-confidence and academic self-esteem. At this time I also received my first F on a mathematics test. What I believed to be failures, at the time, lead to being bullied and social isolation – which transpired to being homeschooled throughout middle school. This experience has taught me to have humility when dealing with all students.

During middle school I began working on a local horse ranch, in Newbury Park, where I regained my social confidence. I worked hard four days a week, with other young adolescents (who were also homeschooled) and battling their own social and academic battles. I saved my money and bought myself a horse at the age of 14. This experience has taught me the importance of building on students’ interests.

I attended high school in Malibu, thus learning the inner workings of another community. My parents allowed me to chose which high school I wished to attend. After visiting many different schools, I settled on Malibu because I saw a girl wearing pink overalls. I remember thinking that if she was confident enough to wear pink overalls, what an accepting place, a place I wished to be. My social skills continued to heal, but my academic ones did not. I struggled with all subjects, had many tearful nights, and barely graduated.

Although, my academic path was bumpy… I was blessed with people who encouraged me and motivated me to do my best. Now the same girl who was teased and struggled with academics, has a Masters Degree in Education (and graduated with Honors). I love teaching. It is more than just an occupation - it is who I am. I am a teacher. As an educator, I can only hope to motivate and inspire young children in the same way that I was motivated and inspired to never give up. I am grateful for all the adversities that I’ve faced - because they have taught me to be the teacher that I am today.

I believe that classroom management and student compassion are my strong points – these come naturally to me. My personal mantra is that of kindness and respect. You never fully know what battles others are fighting, so it is our responsibility to treat others with both kindness and respect. Warmth is crucial to being a great educator. I want my students to enter our classroom and feel welcomed and safe. Albert Einstein said it best, “I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn”.

Very Respectfully,

Tabitha Steen
